The Do's And Don't of the Stock Market
September 16th 2008 09:21
Last week out-of-contract Fremantle ruckman Robert Warnock signalled his intention to play in Melbourne next season. Warnock has already nominated Carlton as his preferred club. Although players are entitled to nominate a club of their choice, a suitable trade cannot always be arranged. Daniel Kerr is rumoured to be on the outer at West Coast. But, as opposed to Warnock, Kerr is a contracted player at the Eagles in 2009. If a deal is unable to be struck during trade week, Kerr will be forced to play for the Eagles. This year's trade period promises to be an interesting one. While Daniel Kerr will be the headline act, several other players will be looking to kickstart their careers.
Brent Reilly - Adelaide (DO)
Reilly was dropped prior to the Crows' short finals campaign and was unable to regain his place in the team. Reilly is quick, agile and has a potent right foot. He can be a damaging midfielder but can also play up forward. Several Victorian clubs will be vying for his services. May provide clubs in contention for a premiership, such as Collingwood and Hawthorn, with added depth in the midfield with Burns and Crawford likely to retire.
Troy Selwood - Brisbane (DO)
It will be interesting to see what Michael Voss does with Selwood. He comes from great footballing stock, which will increase his value on the market. The Saints almost secured Selwood in trade week three years ago. He is a tagger who might suit Ross Lyon's style of play, particularly with Steven Baker in the twilight of his career and Shaun Dempster out for most of the season.
Ben Johnson - Collingwood (DON'T)
Collingwood has received unprecedented publicity in the later stages of the season. With the focus on the Shaw brothers and Alan Didak, Ben Johnson's fall from grace was seemingly swept under the carpet. Eddie MaGuire famously labelled Johnson as 'fat'. Johnson is an experienced player who, at his best, is a valuable running defender. He appears to be on the outer at Collingwood. With Tadgh Kennelly retiring at the end of 2009, Sydney seem to be the best fit.
Kane Tenace - Geelong (DON'T)
The Cats set a precedent last season by allowing several fringe players to leave the club for next to nothing. Tenace is one of the Cats' rare early draft picks to have failed. The reason Tenace may command value on the market is because of his blistering pace. He has been unable to break into Geelong's line-up in the past two seasons and is unlikely to be at the club next season. Tenace may fit Matthew Knights' regime, which has an emphasis on pace.
David Mundy - Fremantle (DO)
Mundy will make a decision on his future later in the week. If the media is to be believed, he is set to return home to Victoria next season. Hawthorn is shaping as the early favourite for Mundy's services. Fremantle will ask for a first round draft pick but will not receive one because Mundy is out of contract. The main question is: do the Hawks have room in the salary cap to accommodate Mundy?
Josh Carr - Fremantle (DON'T)
Why do so many players want out at Fremantle? Mark Harvey must be a likeable fellow. The Dockers gave up three draft picks to secure Carr. He has asked to be traded back to Port Adelaide. It remains to be seen whether Mark Williams has any interest in his former hardman. The Power seem to be undergoing a redevelopment period. If all else fails Carr might want to turn his attention to a career as a prize fighter. Some would suggest that Carr started this career the minute the Dockers recruited him.
Nick Davis - Sydney (DON'T)
Little has been spoken about Davis in recent weeks. Earlier in the season Davis was dropped to the reserves. His season ended prematurely when he dislocated his kneecap. In an interview with 'The Age' Davis listed West Coast as his preferred destination at season's end. He said that his body had three or four seasons left in it. At age twenty-nine, this may not be a realistic assessment. With Ross Lyon's Sydney connections and his tendancy to opt for recycled players, don't discount the Saints.
Jeff White - Melbourne (DON'T)
With Peter Everitt retiring Sydney looms as the main candidate for White's services in 2009. The Swans do not like to bottom out. They have two young ruckmen on their list, but may opt for White as a short term solution. It would be amusing to see White ending his career as a foil for Darren Jolly; the player who could hardly get a game at Melbourne because of him. If Carlton fail to secure Robert Warnock they may swoop.
Daniel Harris - Kangaroos (DO)
Harris is an interesting proposition. Midway through the season he came in for some heavy criticism from Dean Laidley. Despite the Kangaroos' resurgence, Harris never really appeased his coach. Mike Sheehan is almost certain that Harris will be a casualty of the Roos' poor finish to the season. He lacks pace but can be a great extractor. Each team can only facilitate one such player. Essendon has Watson. St.Kilda has Ball. West Coast has Priddis. With Carr gone, Fremantle might be a smokey.
